A short presentation

ANTONIO STANGO

Born in Naples, Italy, in 1957, he has been living in several European countries and in Central Asia. A political scientist, lecturer in International Law and Human Rights, he is the founder (in 1987) and the Secretary General of the Italian Helsinki Committee, member of the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights. From 2003 is a member of the Board of Directors of Hands Off Cain. From August 2006 he a special advisor to the member of the Presidency of the Italian House of Deputies, Sergio D’Elia. From November 2006 he is a member of the Direction of the party Radicali Italiani and of the Nonviolent Transnational Radical Party – to which belong, among else, Italian Minister for European Policies and Foreign Trade Emma Bonino. He is currently the coordinator of the Global Parliamentary Campaign for Moratorium at the United Nations General Assembly.
Since 1981 Antonio Stango has been devoted mainly to human rights activities, organizing many international conferences, editing specialized reviews, and participating in missions to conflict zones. He has been the founder and editor-in-chief of "La Nuova Frontiera" (International Human Rights and Security Review) and of the "Osservatorio sulla proliferazione delle armi e delle tecnologie militari" (Arms & Military Technologies Proliferation Watch). In 1995-1996 he has been the Treasurer of No Peace Without Justice as a key expert of the campaign for the institution of the International Criminal Court. From 2002 to 2003 has been working on human rights education projects for the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network. From 2003 to July 2006 he has been living in Kazakhstan as the Project Director of Freedom House’s Kazakhstan Human Rights Support Program.
From 2003 Antonio Stango has been lecturing in International Law and Human Rights at the Italian Society for the International Organization (SIOI) for postgraduate courses under the supervision of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs
In 2003 he served also as an expert for the EU / TACIS Project “The Legal Protection of Human Rights in the Russian Federation”
In 1996-2003 he has been a consultant, as independent expert, of the Italian Inter-ministerial Committee for Human Rights.
